Speaker: Edwin Gnandt

Edwin Gnandt from Calgary will talk on aspects of Chopin's character and music, and will demonstrate at the piano.  Edwin is writing a book about Chopin titled The Unconscious Mind of Frederic Chopin. His previous book, The Soul of the Music : Gifts from the Golden Age of the Piano (2014) received excellent reviews. 

Edwin has travelled to Paris and to the Carthusian Monastery on Majorca during his extensive research on Chopin. He has presented papers at international conferences in Hawaii, Barcelona, and Italy. Edwin studied at the University of Washington with Randolph Hokanson (himself our guest speaker in a lecture demonstration on the Bach Little Preludes many years ago), and at the Julliard School with Adele Marcus. 

He will be handing out a valuable 20 page booklet.

In the evening, from 7 to 9pm, at 1771 Mortimer Street, he will give a masterclass with four students.  Jasmine Zhang will play Chopin's Etude F Minor Opus 25 and the A Flat Barcarolle Opus 44  by Faure, Sophie Rao will play the Scherzo in B Flat D 593 #1 by Schubert, Karen Chan will play the second and third movements of Sonatine by Maurice Ravel, and Lili Munn will play the first movement of the Sonata K 545 by Mozart.  Jasmine and Sophie  study with Evelyne DeschĂȘnes-Godbold, Karen with Susan de Burgh, and Lili with Frances Perriam.

Edwin has an extensive performing career and his comments will be most valuable.
